11 x 14 acrylic on canvas panel

"This Old Truck"

"This Old Truck"

16 x 20 acrylic on Gallery wrapped canvas

$500

Micanopy, Florida is one of my favorite places in Florida. It is a tiny town with the surroundings just as they were when the town was an Indian trading post in the early 1800's. The grand old live oak trees are beautiful! I saw this cozy little cottage back off the beaten path and the blue truck parked there was just begging to be painted! I love the colors of the deep red cottage behind the bright turquoise truck peppered with rust, all tucked into the hammock of oaks. Such a peaceful place! Click on it to enlarge.

"Grandmother's Treasures"

"Grandmother's Treasures"

11 x 15 Watercolor

$175

I have finally finished the still life I sat up last week. I used some things from my grandmother's time.....a piece of crochet, a granite ware coffee pot and a Fransiscan cup and saucer, as well as an old quilt. The flowers echoed the old fashioned look. The painting has a soft, sentimental look which is soothing inspite of all the different textures. Memories of the past often give us much joy and this painting is meant to do just that! I hope you like it.

"Garden Gate"

"Garden Gate"

8 x 10 acrylic on gallery stretched canvas

I am still working on the still life in watercolors, but thought I would share this painting I did from reference photos taken in Hillsborough, Northern Ireland. Hillsborough is a quaint, interesting little town with some nice little gardens and cute cottages. I was peeking down a private lane when I took the photos! The sides of this canvas are painted, too, so there is no need for a frame. Click on it to see details.

Starting a new Still Life painting...

I am working on a watercolor still life. I bought some gorgeous flowers to go in the little granite ware coffee pot and spent practically all day yesterday setting up the still life. Still not too happy with it, I thought I'd better start painting before the lilies lost their petals. I drew the composition yesterday and alas, the big lily bud bloomed out overnight! Oh, well, I will still paint one big flower and one bud. This painting is going to take some time. It if quite busy and colorful. Keep looking...it will be done when it is done!! (that's an amazing statement, isn't it?)

"Autumn Mums"

"Autumn Mums"

"Golden Zinnias"

Zinnias bloom in my garden when nothing else will! They love sun and hot weather, and we have plenty of both! This cheery little painting presents the lovely golden color and I especially like that color next to the purple flowers.

"Sunflowers"

"Sunflowers"

11 1/2 x 16 Pastel

$125

I finished the pastel painting I had started. The poor sunflowers I used as a model have just about had it! They didn't last very long, but they were purchased and not something I grew ( I wish I had some growing). They lasted long enough to do the painting, though.

I like the way it turned out. The colors are a bit brighter in real life than here. I try to take as close a photo as the real thing, but it is often rather difficult, even though I try various camera settings, various and different light sources and go outdoors, as well. This photo was the best of the lot.

Pastel "Sunflowers" in progress...

Today I have sat up a still life of sunflowers in a clear orange vase and a little tea pot sitting by its side. You can see how I have started to work. The blue tape holds my Canson Pastel paper to a board and you can see all my pastels , as well as pastel pencils on my drawing table. These days, due to problem knees and feet, I prefer to sit and work, but it means getting up frequently and putting my painting board on an upright easel to view the painting from a distance.

I should have this finished by tomorrow...maybe!

Wednesday, September 7, 2011

"Fall Roses"

"Fall Roses"

7 3/4 x 10 Pastel

$50

I am enjoying doing some Pastels just now. It has been a few years, really, since I have done much with them. I decided to do a series of paintings with them and strive for more looseness, freedom from subject matter, but to concentrate on composition, value and color. Anyway, I am just getting started, so it feels a little strange to not be using a brush and liquid pigments! Pastels are soft--the edges usually look soft in the painting and that is quite nice. Click on this to see it better. Your comments are appreciated.

Sunday, September 4, 2011

"The Garden Bench"

"The Garden Bench"

8 x 11 Pastel

$50

This is a loosely done Pastel of a scene in Heathcote Botanical Garden, one of my favorite places to paint and explore. I did this, however, from some of the many photos I've taken there. It is too hot right now to even think about plein air painting! Can Fall be around the corner? I certainly hope so!

Thursday, September 1, 2011

"Fall Still Life with Pumpkin"

"Fall Still Life with Pumpkin"

8 x 10 acrylic on stretched canvas

$65

Today is the first day of September, and even though it is hot here in Florida, I am thinking Fall! The grocers already have fall guords and decorations out, so that really puts one in the mood. Oh, how I long for cooler weather! Love the Fall colors in this painting!

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

"Still Life with Begonias"

"Still Life with Begonias"

9 x 12 acrylic on hardboard panel

$125

I painted this a little while back, but some of you may have missed it. I am so busy at the moment with other projects than painting, so have been only sketching in the sketch book for a few days when I get a moment to rest. That is why all artists need a personal assistant...to take care of things like re-arranging the studio, purchasing new materials, entering shows and mailing packages, etc. Well, one can dream, I guess!

This painting was fun to do...I sat up the still life in the studio and used some old pieces of granite ware that I love in it and the chenille bit the items are sitting on was challenging to paint.

I love how it turned out, though. Click on the painting to see details.

Sunday, August 28, 2011

"Cabbage"

"Cabbage"

6 x 6 Acrylic on hardboard

$50 SOLD

Almost like a big flower, this beautiful cabbage is rich with color and detail. I love the slight purple color working through the leaves. Click on it for detail.

"Bougainvillea"

"Bougainvillea"

21 x 28 Watercolor

"Irish Garedn"

"Irish Garden"

8 1/2 x 11

$80

This rather quickly done, wet into wet, watercolor is of a lovely Irish Garden in Northern Ireland. Whenever I am there, I take numerous photos and by the time I get home, I've forgotten exactly which garden, etc. it was! Not always, but this one I am not sure of. I just remember how gorgeous the flowers were and the paths leading up to the cottage and manor house. Click on it to see details. My favorite part of this painting, however, is the sky!

Saturday, August 20, 2011

"Old Florida Barn"

"Old Florida Barn"

11 x 14 watercolor

$150.

This old barn is located in the beautiful little 1800's town of McIntosh, Florida. Every year the town has a 1890's Festival and I love to go and wander all over town taking photos. Every old house there has an old barn in the yard and they are still there looking just like yesteryear! When the railroad left the town, progress just stopped and so everything is just as it was.
This painting was done wet into wet and I used siran wrap near the bottom to texture the ground and grass. Click on it to see details.

"Sunflowers II"

"Sunflowers II"

11 X 14 WATERCOLOR

$200

I think one of everyone's favorite flowers is the Sunflower. It is cheery and stately, attracts birds and goes right into Fall. I had fun painting this, letting the background develop with wet into wet washes. I tried to bring out the darker values so the flowers would really "pop". Hope you like it!

To purchase this Sunflower painting, click on Buy Now on the right of my blog.

"Old School House Museum"

"Old School House Museum"

10 1/2 x 14 watercolor

$150

The old school house, turned into a museum. is probably the most historic building here and it is typical Florida "cracker" style. I chose to do this painting of just a part of the building because of the interesting shadows playing on the building and in the yard. Later I may do the whole building. I love historic structures! Click on the photo to see details. Thanks for looking.

To purchase a painting, click on "Buy Now" and follow directions. I include a certificate of originality with each painting and postage ranges from $10 to $20, including packaging. Why not start collecting original art today!

"Kelli's Irish House"

"Kelli's Irish House"

10 1/2 x 14 1/2 watercolor

NFS

Ever since I saw my daughter Kelli had cut the tree in front of the house into a topiary, I have wanted to paint her house. It has such character and the topiary and all the flowers just add to that. I don't see how she did the pruning herself, as the house is two story and tall, so you can see that the tree is also tall. I think the painting was successful and hope you will click on it to see all the detail.

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

"Margaret's Zinnias"

"Margaret's Zinnias"

8 3/4 x 11 watercolor

$125

Margaret planted some gorgeous zinnia bushes from the garden center and they have just grown and withstood the heat beautifully. They look like "painted daisies" sort of....I guess "painted zinnia", with streaks of different colors in them.

Click on it to see details. I like the loose background---just colors washed in together.

Saturday, July 23, 2011

"Left Behind:

"Left Behind"

10 1/2 x 14 watercolor

$200

A strange little red truck was in the tractor graveyard. These three vehicles seemed to be a particular family. If they were cartoons, I am sure the tractors would be whispering words of comfort to the poor little truck. Will they forever repose here in the tractor graveyard: Wonder what is their destiny? As rusty and old as they are, still I think they make an interesting and colorful painting, just like people, huh. Interesting analogy!

Click on it to see details. I threw on some sea salt on the wet paint to give texture and at the bottom foreground, I used siran wrap laid on the wet paint to simulate rough and slightly muddy ground. Your comments welcome.

Wednesday, July 20, 2011

"Red Wheels"

"Red Wheels"

10 x 14 watercolor

$200

I am having so much fun with these old rusty tractor paintings! I suppose eventually they will end and I will push on to something else, but who knows when?! In visiting the tractor graveyard, I spoted a bent wheel in the shape of a heart....don't know if someone did it on purpose, but I took a photo and I've put it into the foreground of this painting. Do you spot it? Please click on this to see the heart shaped wheel and all the detail. I will be so glad to get my better camera out of the shop (the power button had stuck) because this one tends to reduce the color intensity of the paintings. But enjoy anyway and just imagine all the memories these old tractors hold. Thanks for looking.

Monday, July 18, 2011

"Spare Parts"

"Spare Parts"

9 x 12 Watercolor

$200

I'm still painting away scenes from the tractor graveyard! I love all the beautiful colors found in the rusty relics!

I am painting mostly wet into wet, which means that I apply a nice, juicy brush load of a color right next or even on another wet color. The colors mingle and mix and it is quite fun. The ground was painted by washing in burnt sienna and Paynes gray, then laying down some siran wrap on the wet paint. I manipulated the wrap a bit to get the sweep of shapes leading to the center of interest, the tires. Click on this to see a close up of how the ground was made using the siran wrap and also the mingled colors in the rusty metal. Your comments are appreciated, too.

"Rusty Tractors"

"Rusty Tractors"

9x12 Watercolor

$200

You really must click on this to see the detail and colors. Even though these old machines are no longer used and are rusty, the selection of colors I used is anything but depressing! I think they are actually happy to be languishing in the Florida landscape among the palmettos and Spanish moss.

Tuesday, July 12, 2011

"Covered with Vines"

"Covered with Vines"

7x9 Watercolor

$85

Another old tractor painting! I am having so much fun with this series of paintings. This tractor was covered with vines, and seemed to just become a part of the landscape! I love the colors in this and thought it turned out pretty well. Hope you like it. Click on it to see the details.
